National Director Dr. Thomas B. Jelke, Florida International ’90, was honored with the Jack L. Anson Award at the annual meeting of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors (AFA) on December 5 in Fort Worth, Texas. Two other SigEps also were recognized at the event.
“We had the pleasure of honoring three icons in the field of fraternity and sorority life, each leaving their own significant legacy on the profession. Their impact provides inspiration for other aspiring professionals to work towards,” said Veronica Moore, president of AFA and associate director of student engagement at Temple University.
Jelke has served on SigEp’s National Board of Directors since 2009. He is the president and CEO of his own consulting firm, T. Jelke Solutions, for Greek letter organizations and higher education institutions.
The Anson Award, AFA’s highest honor, is presented to a well-respected individual who has demonstrated a commitment to the fraternity and sorority community beyond his or her own organization. The honoree will have assisted in developing interfraternal and higher education partnerships, fostered positive change for the fraternal movement, and/or served as a role model for students and professionals.
Jelke fits all of these criteria. He was formerly director of Greek life at Florida State University and was Panhellenic advisor at Indiana University. He has taught courses on higher education and fraternal organizations and has volunteered for Kappa Delta and Alpha Xi Delta sororities, in addition to his years of SigEp involvement. He received his doctorate in higher education from Indiana University.
Additionally, the AFA recognized Dr. Charles G. Eberly, Bowling Green State ’63, Order of the Golden Heart. The Dr. Charles Eberly Oracle Award was named and endowed in his honor. Eberly is a renowned academic who helped create the Oracle, AFA’s peer-reviewed research journal on the study of fraternities and sororities.
Further, Timothy S. Wilkinson, West Chester ’96, received the Sue Kraft Fussell Distinguished Service Award. Wilkinson serves as associate dean of student engagement at Wake Forest University, and was formerly senior assistant dean and director of fraternity and sorority affairs at Lehigh University. The award is given for service to AFA, the fraternity and sorority communities, and/or communities beyond the recipient’s campus or organization.
