Sigma Phi Epsilon mourns the passing of Douglas McRaney, a beloved former staff member whose warmth and dedication shaped the experience of thousands of brothers, volunteers and friends of SigEp.
McRaney joined the Headquarters staff in 1988, stepping into the role of receptionist with limited professional experience but an abundance of natural gifts. What she lacked in lines on a résumé she more than made up for in presence. From her first days behind the front desk, she became the steady, welcoming voice of SigEp — the first person many brothers ever spoke to when they reached out for help, guidance or connection.
A native of Clarksdale, Mississippi, McRaney carried with her the gentle cadence of the Delta. Her lilting Southern drawl, paired with her genuine interest in every person she encountered, made callers feel as though they were speaking with an old friend. On some days, she answered nearly 200 phone calls, each one met with patience, kindness and the attentive spirit that became her hallmark.
But McRaney was far more than the voice of SigEp — she was its heart. She guided chapter officers through challenges with calm assurance. She connected volunteers to the right staff member with ease. She greeted visitors at the red doors with warmth that made Headquarters feel like home. Her presence created a family-like atmosphere that shaped the culture of the Fraternity’s staff during her tenure and beyond.
McRaney was featured in a 2001 SigEp Journal article in which she spoke about how much she enjoyed working at the Fraternity and interacting with members from across the country.
SigEp CEO Brian Warren reflected on her legacy with deep affection: “She represented the very best of SigEp and its staff. Her kindness, grace, patience and unmistakable Southern charm left a lasting impression on all who encountered her.”
McRaney retired in 2008, but the spirit she cultivated — one of hospitality, compassion and genuine care — continues to echo through the halls of Headquarters and in the memories of all who knew her. Her legacy is not measured in job titles or tasks completed, but in the countless lives she touched simply by being herself.
As a Fraternity committed to Virtue, Diligence and Brotherly Love, we give thanks for McRaney’s life — a life that embodied these values with strength and unwavering sincerity.
On behalf of Sigma Phi Epsilon, its brothers, volunteers and staff — past and present — we honor her memory with gratitude and affection.
May her kindness continue to inspire us, and may her memory be a blessing.
