One last gift

Categories: Tower Room

By Bill Hoke, Arizona ’73

While many brothers live by SigEp’s cardinal principles, few have lived Virtue, Diligence and Brotherly Love as passionately as the late John A. Stuart, Arizona ’73, known to his contemporaries as “Enzo.” Driven by a lifelong commitment to SigEp’s brotherhood, Stuart put his money where his heart was by funding an annual award to recognize Arizona Beta brothers who uniquely exemplify these values.

From his days as a freshman leading 40 classmates to build a brick walkway that lasted 50 years, to his successful career, Stuart had a rare gift of turning vision into reality. Stuart’s final great vision was honoring his close friend William “Red” Moulinier, ’73. To Stuart, Moulinier was the living embodiment of the Fraternity’s most important principle, brotherly love.

Classmates William “Red” Moulinier and John A. Stuart proudly show off the William R. Moulinier Brotherly Love Award silver bucket. A gift from Stuart, it honors their 50-year friendship and recognizes future generations of Arizona Beta brothers who model the Fraternity’s highest ideals.

“The person who has best exemplified that in my 50 years as a SigEp is Red Moulinier, and I want that spirit to be celebrated in the chapter for many years to come,” Stuart stated.

To ensure that spirit lives on, Stuart established the William R. Moulinier Brotherly Love Award. The honor was first announced in 2023 during the class of ’73’s 50th reunion homecoming celebration, ensuring Moulinier’s example inspires the chapter for years to come.

“I was shocked when the award was announced,” Moulinier said, reflecting on the surprise tribute, “and I’m thrilled to be part of celebrating brotherly love each year.”

The chapter announced the first award recipient at its 2025 homecoming dinner. Ross Jorgenson, ’25, was chosen for “demonstrating and modeling brotherly love in everything he does,” said Mateo Alvarez-Rooney, ’27. “From serving as chaplain to mentoring younger members, Ross has always been someone people look up to. He’s the type of guy who will pick up no matter when you call.”

The Moulinier Award was Brother Stuart’s enduring legacy for the chapter he loved. His goal was that “the seeds of relationships that are spread to the coming generations of SigEp brothers will be as meaningful to them as they were to him,” said his son, Anthony Stuart.

Stuart’s vision carries an especially poignant weight, as he passed away in August 2025 following a yearslong battle with Parkinson’s disease shortly before the inaugural award was presented. While he supported the initiative through a liquid fund during his lifetime, a final $100,000 gift from his estate has transitioned the Arizona Beta William Redwood Moulinier Brotherly Love Award into a permanent endowment. This contribution ensures his commitment to the chapter is honored in perpetuity, supporting brothers for generations to come. As his son noted, Stuart hoped the gift would “inspire all Arizona Beta brothers to keep one another in focus” by celebrating a brother who embodies that sentiment each year.

Beyond undergraduate support, Stuart’s gift sustains the chapter’s alumni network. Mark Slepian, ’86, the inaugural recipient of the John Stuart Alumni Award, exemplifies this mission through his leadership of Arizona Beta’s alumni and volunteer corporation and regional Phoenix reunions.

As a member of the SigEp Legacy Society, Stuart’s foresight in planning this estate gift bridged his lifelong philanthropy with sustained financial support, ensuring Arizona Beta’s bond of brotherhood endures for future generations.
