Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton visited Northern Iowa on Monday, September 14, to present a policy agenda aimed at addressing sexual assault on college campuses.
In her speech, Clinton praised the Northern Iowa SigEps for their campus-wide sexual assault prevention efforts. Prior to her speech, Clinton met with Northern Iowa’s chapter president, Alex Stepanek, ’16.
“This particular fraternity has really emphasized education and prevention, and I want to know what works, and according to the university this is working,” Clinton told the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier. “It may be currently the exception, but how do we make it the rule?”
SigEp’s Northern Iowa Chapter is not alone in their efforts to prevent sexual assaults on campus. Chapters across the country have partnered with national sorority Alpha Delta Pi (ADPi) to host open and honest conversations about sex, consent and university policies.
“We believe that our members can bring male and female students together to have conversations that ultimately make our campuses safer,” said SigEp CEO Brian Warren, Virginia ’04.
In April, SigEp announced that it had teamed up with ADPi to educate students about sexual assault and challenge them to continue the conversation with an innovative campaign called Live Your Oath.
