The Standards Board includes the following elected chapter officers:
- Chaplain
- Senior marshal
- Junior marshal
- Guard
- Guide
Together, they are responsible for planning the performance and study of the Ritual and ensuring it is a part of everyday chapter life. Additionally, the Standards Board acts as the judicial branch of the chapter by upholding Grand Chapter and local bylaws, resolving disputes between brothers, holding trials and coordinating appeals for brothers who fall short of chapter standards.
The same brothers who perform the Ritual are tasked with judicial responsibilities because the chapter should be governed in accordance with the principles and values outlined in the Ritual. Brothers should be elected to the Standards Board because the chapter respects them as role models, and has confidence in their ability to carry out both the Ritual and trial aspects of the job.
The chaplain is the chairman of the Standards Board and represents their interests as a member of the chapter’s executive board.
The top priorities of the Standards Board are to:
- Ensure the presence of the Ritual in everyday chapter life.
- Plan the performance and study of the Ritual, and maintenance of all Ritual equipment.
- Enforce both Grand Chapter and local chapter bylaws, uphold chapter standards, and resolve disputes among brothers.
- Hold trials and coordinate appeals for brothers in violation of bylaws or chapter standards.
- Review proper risk management practices before events.
- Set and work to achieve SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timely).
