Arthur J. "Jay" Hurt III, Davidson ’88
Jay is a 1988 graduate of Davidson College and a member of the North Carolina Epsilon chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon.
Professionally, Jay is the former president and CEO of The Hurt Company, Inc., one of the nation’s largest privately-held oil marketing and distribution companies. In 2010, Jay was instrumental in the strategy, creation and formation of RelaDyne, LLC, a company initially founded through the simultaneous acquisition of The Hurt Company and three other industry-leading companies. RelaDyne is a $1+ billion company focusing on the integration of reliable services with the manufacturing and distribution of refined petroleum products. Jay retired in 2015 after successfully selling RelaDyne in one of the largest private-equity-backed transactions in industry history. Not the type to stay retired, Jay recently purchased 300 acres in Cashiers, N.C., and is developing it into a private, low-density residential community.
Jay is a member of the Board of Visitors at Davidson College and in 2018 established the Jay Hurt Hub for Innovation and Entrepreneurship with a $5 million lead gift to help generate and support future generations of innovators and business leaders.
Since joining Sigma Phi Epsilon, Jay has served the Fraternity in a variety of local, district and national capacities, and is the first person ever to be elected to Sigma Phi Epsilon’s National Board of Directors as both a student and an alumnus. Jay has also served as a director of SigEp’s National Housing Corporation and as a trustee and president of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation. Jay is a recipient of the National Interfraternity Council’s distinguished Silver Medal award for his efforts as a co-founder of SigEp’s Ruck Leadership Institute and for his decades-long service to and leadership in Sigma Phi Epsilon. Jay has served as a facilitator and mentor to our undergraduate brothers numerous times at the Ruck Leadership Institute and five times on SigEp’s Tragos Quest to Greece. In 2019, at the 56th SigEp conclave, Jay was inducted in the Order of the Golden Heart, Sigma Phi Epsilon’s highest honor.
