From rechartering California Alpha to launching a healthy snack company, Rodger Morris ’05 knows what it means to blaze a new trail. Today, as co-founder of Pop Oats, he reflects on how his SigEp experience helped shape his journey—and why he’s excited for the chapter’s new beginning at the University of California-Berkeley.
Building the Brotherhood
Rodger initially joined another fraternity as a freshman but found the experience unfulfilling, especially after becoming a resident assistant. When the chance came to help bring SigEp back to campus during his sophomore year, he seized the opportunity.
“It was something I felt could give back to the university and organization for years to come,” he shared.
Serving as chapter treasurer helped prepare Rodger for business school, offering valuable lessons in teamwork, leadership, and accountability. With no house or formal meeting space, Cal Alpha’s restart came with unique challenges—but Rodger remembers it fondly.
“I was here to go above and beyond, helping others while putting my skills to work,” he said. Despite the obstacles, the bond among brothers and their shared purpose made the experience meaningful.
Life After College
After graduation, Rodger spent 16 years in investment banking and real estate, holding roles in investments, asset management, credit, and corporate strategy—ultimately serving as head of ESG at his firm.
“Many aspects of my SigEp experience were absolutely great building blocks for learning two valuable life skills: adaptiveness and resourcefulness,” he said.
Those lessons continue to serve him well as he grows Pop Oats, a healthy snack brand inspired by his young son. Starting something from scratch—whether a chapter or a company—takes grit, vision, and commitment. Rodger credits SigEp with helping him build that mindset.
Rechartering Today
As Cal Alpha begins its next chapter, Rodger is excited to watch the restart unfold after years of discussion.
“This is Cal Alpha, after all—the first in California and one with a rich history,” he said. “Many great young men built and led this group over the years, and it’ll be exciting to see more young men step up to etch their name in the history books.”
Now a parent and entrepreneur, Rodger understands the importance of selecting the right men to carry the mission forward. “It takes effort to build the culture of a chapter,” he added, “but when you choose young men who want to grow SigEp for the right reasons, the future is bright.”
