The New York Iota Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon has a unique tradition that helps those in need around Christmastime. For the 15th year in a row, the brothers at SUNY-Fredonia have run 45.8 miles along Route 5 to Buffalo, carrying a large Christmas tree.
At 5 a.m., with the temperature at 32 degrees, the first four brothers hoisted the tree up and started running. Every two miles, they switched out with fresh SigEps from a car following alongside. Twelve hours later, they made it to Lafayette Square in Buffalo, where they delivered the tree to a family in need.
In addition to providing a large, live tree to a family who may not otherwise be able to afford one, the brothers raised funds and awareness for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, SigEp’s national philanthropic partner. The event is an opportunity for the chapter to lead and make an impact in its community.
“It looks odd when you drive by on the highway, but once people find out what you’re doing, they’re aware of the cause,” said vice president of programming Sean Murphy, SUNY-Fredonia ’18.
“When you give the tree to that family, it makes it worth it.”
The yearly event has also made an impact on the brothers, some of whom have participated for several years in a row. And they get to see immediate results from their efforts: “It’s a great feeling,” said chapter president Alec Smith, SUNY-Fredonia ’18. “Last year, we actually got to meet the family, and the woman has a history of domestic abuse, and she had two little kids, and just seeing the kids’ faces was just the best part.”
