Volunteer Spotlight: Matthew Bunch, California-Berkeley ’05

Categories: Alumni & Volunteer News

To show our appreciation, we’re recognizing a number of dedicated SigEp volunteers who give their time to support our chapters and mentor our undergraduate brothers. We’re grateful for the commitment of each of SigEp’s more than 3,000 volunteers.

Matthew Bunch is a talented volunteer for his home chapter of California Alpha at California-Berkeley as well as chapter counselor at California Theta at Sacramento State. Active in serving several SigEp chapters around the West Coast for nearly a decade, Brother Bunch has also volunteered for Nevada Alpha at Nevada Reno and California Eta at UC-Davis. He’s approached each of these volunteer roles with care for the undergraduates and a desire to see them succeed.

Why do you volunteer with SigEp?

I volunteer with SigEp to help our younger brothers have the same caliber of experience that I did, or better. The college experience may have changed, but the need for virtue, diligence, and especially brotherly love has only grown.

How has serving as a SigEp volunteer impacted your life?

Becoming a SigEp in college taught me to be a better man through our cardinal principles. Volunteering for SigEp as an alumnus has honed those by teaching me patience, compassion, and how to do the right thing even when it’s hard. But, probably most importantly, SigEp has given me family. After college, I moved away and had no family and few friends close by. I found a SigEp chapter, began volunteering and had a whole new set of younger brothers to mentor and older brothers to guide me. Nearly 15 years later, those men are still a part of my daily life and together we have had a hand in shaping the lives of hundreds more SigEps since.

Nominate a Volunteer Spotlight!
Do you know a volunteer who has give their time and talent to SigEp who you believe should be showcased in our Volunteer Spotlight Series? Fill out our Volunteer Spotlight Nomination form. The Volunteer Services team will promptly review your nomination. Thank you for taking the time to help us celebrate our SigEp volunteers.
