Dear brother,
Last year, SigEp formed a partnership with Alpha Delta Pi Sorority called Live Your Oath. As leading Greek organizations on campuses across the nation, we believe that together we can make an impact to fight campus sexual assault.
Sexual Assault Awareness Month begins tomorrow. As fraternity men, we’ve all taken an oath that binds us. We cannot live in accordance with that oath while being complacent about sexual assault on our campuses.
An ongoing area of concern in cases of sexual assault is the role of alcohol in determining whether consent was given. In our work over the last year, a number of questions from undergraduates across the country necessitated our taking a closer look at the issue. While institutional policies vary on this topic, we incorporated two of the standards on the spectrum—the No Alcohol Policy and the Incapacitation Standard.
It is our hope that the 2016 version of Live Your Oath will provide your chapter, and perhaps the broader fraternal community, with the ability to explore and dialogue about your specific campus policy, while highlighting the ever-changing landscape across the country.
Over the past year, we’ve reached hundreds of thousands of people with the message of ending sexual assault. In 2016, we can make an even greater impact, but it depends on you and your brothers. Here’s what you can do to make a difference:
1. Watch the new Live Your Oath video. If ADPi is on your campus, have a combined chapter meeting to do so.
2. Facilitate a conversation. Using the online resources, have your chapters discuss the video and what you can take away from it.
3. Take the Oath.Print the Live Your Oath cards and sign your name.
4. #LiveYourOath.Once you have signed your oath card, post a photo on social media using the official hashtag.
SigEp must lead campuses on this important issue. That means doing what we said we would do when we joined this Fraternity: Live Our Oath.
I look forward to seeing your #LiveYourOath photos in the coming days and weeks. Thanks to you, we can make a difference and fight sexual assault.
Fraternally,
Richard W. Bennet III
Grand President
