I had just finished up a recruitment workshop at one of my highest-performing chapters. The chapter president walked up to me, shook my hand and thanked me for helping teach his guys how to recruit. He lingered and I could tell he wanted to ask me something so I said, “What else can I help you with?” And then he said, “I’ve got two questions. Is being a regional director a full-time job? And can you help us with other areas of chapter operations?”
It was that moment that I realized even some of our highest-performing chapters didn’t know what a regional director did or how he could help their chapter.
Here are five things you need to know about your regional director:
1. We’re passionate about SigEp. We took this job because we love the organization and believe in its mission.
2. We’re passionate about your success. Our number one priority throughout the year is to help you become the best version of yourself and see your chapter become one of the best in the nation.
3. We have valuable knowledge and skills. We spent 10 weeks in Richmond, Va. receiving professional training on every area of chapter operations. We’ve got what you need to be successful.
4. Being a regional director isn’t a job, it’s a lifestyle. We live out of our car. We sleep on couches. We don’t take weekends off. And there’s never a meeting time that’s too early or too late. Why? See #1 and #2.
5. We want to have fun and get to know you. We enjoy getting off campus and actually experiencing the cities that we work in. Feel free to invite us out to a local restaurant, museum or park. Help us get to know you as a person, not just a chapter leader.
Now that you know a little bit about us, let’s talk about how to maximize our time and talents.
Here are five tips for effectively utilizing your regional director:
1. Introduce yourself. If you don’t know your regional director, click here to find out who it is and send them a quick introduction email so we can connect in person.
2. Become familiar with what we can offer you. The Regional Director Suite of Services outlines everything we are trained to offer you and your chapter.
3. Ask for help. Once you know what your regional director can do for you, reach out to him and ask. Some of the highest performing chapters ask their regional director for help on a monthly basis.
4. Don’t wait for him to come to your campus. Your regional director spends 95 percent of his time away from your chapter, but he is willing and able to do a lot of work remotely. We are flexible and can to offer service via Google Hangout or over the phone.
5. Be honest. The only way we can help you is if we know what’s really going on. If you’re not honest with us, you’re wasting our time and we are wasting yours. Remember, we wake up every morning focused on helping you succeed. Help us help you by being honest.
I consider myself one of the luckiest young professionals in the world. As my friends sit in cubicles and work on spreadsheets, I visit college campuses and work with the future leaders of our country.
I hope you see how committed we are to your success. Will you take advantage of this commitment?
