The brothers at the University of Georgia raised over $34,000 for children battling motor and speech disabilities and injuries. The chapter made the donation through its campus dance marathon program, UGA Miracle. The proceeds will go towards the Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (CIRU) at the Scottish Rite Pediatric Hospital in Atlanta.
“I first went to the dance marathon my freshmen year and just really had my ‘aha’ moment,” said Ryan Garrahan, ‘15. “There was a young boy who had back issues and he went through rehab in the CIRU and was able to play baseball that spring. Through that event, we gave him the thing he loves most back to him, and that’s sports.”
Garrahan, who has served on the UGA Miracle executive board for two years, was recently elected to be the new executive director. “Being pushed and encouraged by brothers to chase after something I was going to do and enjoy every day was huge,” he said.
Danielle Hubbard, the graduate advisor to the UGA Miracle executive board, describes Georgia Delta as one of the most involved fraternities. “They’ve always been at the top of fundraising as far as fraternities go,” she said.
The passion was evident when the chapter raised an all-time record after years of supporting UGA Miracle. Georgia Delta’s philanthropy chair, Cameron Hay, ‘15, said, “Hearing those stories from the families and hearing them say ‘thank you’ just adds more fuel of passion to really drive ourselves.”
Georgia Delta raises money for UGA Miracle through its annual Red Door Roundup and haunted house events. Brothers also contribute to the campaign individually throughout the academic year.
