When starting his undergraduate journey at the University of California-Riverside, Matt Gomez was looking to become a doctor. During his sophomore year, he decided to join SigEp. After that, he gained many amazing experiences that helped him get to where he is today in the medical field and as a leader. SigEp helped Matt lay his foundation and learn who he is as a person. He was expected to go out and do important or epic things as a member of SigEp at UC-Riverside, and this helped him learn how to network and learn new skills whenever possible. Matt uses these skills every day when working as the balanced man steward for the California Beta Gamma chapter at UC-Riverside.
Matt is always looking for ways to help grow the men at Cal Beta Gamma, whether it be through leadership training, career coaching or just being a mentor. He wants to make sure that the undergraduate members get the full SigEp experience, and he tries his best to ensure every brother gets it.
Some things Matt thinks about as a volunteer:
Matt’s favorite thing to do as a volunteer?
- “Help brothers see the bigger picture for their lives.” Matt does a lot of career coaching and leadership development with brothers to help them understand this. He believes that one of the biggest challenges for the undergrads today is limiting their connections to just their home chapter and not reaching out to the massive SigEp network. He tries to help brothers make connections all across the country, as this can also help fast track growth within the members and the chapter.
What keeps Matt up at night as a volunteer?
- Concern that brothers are not taking full advantage of what SigEp offers. Whether it’s not utilizing connections or not pushing themselves to be the best, this can affect them during undergrad and after graduation. Matt wants brothers to take risks and develop real-world skills earlier and wants them to know not to be afraid to fail. He wants brothers to never feel bad about asking for help, as he would do this for any SigEp nationwide.
What is Matt’s most significant accomplishment/impact during his time as a volunteer?
- Matt does med school advising for brothers who are going into that field. He helps with interview practice, looking over resumes and med school applications. He also offers research experience or leadership training to help them improve their chances of getting into med school. From his past experiences with consulting and leadership training curricula he built for a job, he has helped implement these elements into the BMP at California Beta Gamma. Matt also added that he recently bought 45 acres in Kentucky and wants to organize a SigEp retreat there for brothers to come to learn new life skills as a future goal.
