The Fraternity is saddened by the passing of brother and SigEp Citation recipient John Thrasher, Florida State ’65. Thrasher’s career was distinguished by decades of service to others via the military, Florida state government and higher education. An advocate for positive change within the Greek system, Thrasher was most widely known for his accomplishments as the 15th president of Florida State University.

December 18, 1943 – May 30, 2025
After completing his bachelor’s degree, Thrasher enlisted in the U.S. Army. Serving with distinction, he earned an Army Commendation Medal and two Bronze Stars. Following his discharge as a captain, he enrolled in law school at Florida State and finished his degree in 1972.
Thrasher began his legal career in private practice and went on to serve as general counsel for the Florida Medical Association for 20 years. He later entered politics. Following his election to the Florida House of Representatives in 1992, he ran unopposed for three additional terms and was unanimously elected Speaker of the House in 1998. Thrasher was elected in 2009 to the Florida State Senate and served until 2014.
Throughout his distinguished career, Florida State held a special place in his heart. Thrasher’s support while serving in the house was crucial to passing legislation to establish the school’s College of Medicine. A monumental achievement, it became the first new medical school in the country in 20 years when it opened in 2000. A building at the medical school is named in his honor.

In 2001, Thrasher was appointed to Florida State’s board of trustees and served as chair. He continued to serve on the board until 2006. His love for and commitment to his alma mater was recognized with his election as the university’s president in 2014. Calling it his “dream job,” Thrasher enthusiastically carried out his duties as president — leading a campaign that raised more than $1 billion, launching new initiatives for student success and increasing the university’s public profile — before retiring in 2021.
Thrasher spoke with the Journal in a 2019 article about his career and commitment to public service.
Some of the many brothers who knew and loved Thrasher shared their thoughts on how he impacted their lives:
“Brother John Thrasher was an influential force in many circles throughout his life, which can be intimidating to young college students. As president of Florida State University, he cared for and supported all students at FSU during difficult times and brought unity through his fantastic leadership and love for the university. My favorite memory of Brother Thrasher was his participation in our groundbreaking ceremony for our new house. He graciously hosted the whole chapter at the president’s mansion for the reception party.” — Rob Atkisson, Florida State ’93
“President John Thrasher, our brother, will forever be remembered as a pillar of the FSU and SigEp community. His influence was woven into the fabric of our chapter through invaluable support and guidance, especially in our most difficult moments. As I reflect on the many conversations we shared, I will never forget his empathetic nature and steadfast commitment.” — Andres Salas, Florida State ’21
