In funding these special scholarships, Brother Thomas O. Hicks recognizes and rewards brothers who get on track with their grades after a poor start with the additional goal of motivating all SigEp undergraduates to achieve good academic performance while a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon.
These scholarships are funded by the Thomas O. Hicks Endowment of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation, established by Brother Tom Hicks, Texas-Austin '68. Brother Hicks, a Life Trustee of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation, has been the owner of the Texas Rangers Baseball Club and the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League, and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Hicks Holdings LLC, a private investment firm based in Dallas, Texas.
While a sophomore at the University of Texas, the Texas Alpha Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon motivated Brother Hicks to get serious about his grades, which had suffered during his freshman year. He improved his grade point average significantly during his sophomore year and continued to be a good student. Because of his good grades, he was able to attend graduate school at the University of Southern California and obtain his master's degree. Tom then had a successful banking career in New York and Dallas before starting his own company.
