To show our appreciation, we’re recognizing a number of dedicated SigEp volunteers who give their time to support our chapters and mentor our undergraduate brothers. We’re grateful for the commitment of each of SigEp’s more than 3,000 volunteers.

Dr. Carrie Whittier is assistant dean of students at Valparaiso University. Dr. Whittier began serving as a SigEp volunteer in 1997 and is currently Balanced Man Steward for Indiana Zeta at Valparaiso, in addition to volunteering for North Carolina Mu at Elon. An experienced Greek life professional, Dr. Whittier served as president of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors. She’s a longtime Carlson Leadership Academy facilitator, and in 2016 the Fraternity honored her service with the Distinguished Volunteer Award.

Why do you volunteer with SigEp? 

I choose to volunteer with Sigma Phi Epsilon because I believe in the experience being provided to undergraduate men in Sigma Phi Epsilon. I value excellence in all of my endeavors, and this is in alignment with the Fraternity’s efforts to provide an outstanding member experience that will be transformative to young men during their college years and beyond. In addition, I believe that my involvement as a volunteer is valued by the undergraduates, other volunteers, and the national Fraternity, and that my involvement is making a positive impact on others.

How has serving as a SigEp volunteer impacted your life? 

It is not often that a person is allowed to be an insider when they are so clearly an outsider to an organization. This Fraternity has welcomed me with open arms since my first involvement as a volunteer, and for that I am forever grateful. I am a significantly better fraternity and sorority professional as a result of my involvement with Sigma Phi Epsilon, and I believe that my involvement requires me to continue to elevate my knowledge, skills, and abilities as a volunteer, as a professional, and as a person. “This Fraternity Will Be Different” is not just something that was said in 1901. This Fraternity lives this declaration everyday and has allowed this outsider to become an insider.
