Why does SigEp offer the Balanced Man Scholarship?

Have you heard about the average amount of debt a college student graduates with? It’s greater than $31,000 in student loans. With limited resources, this means you will likely invest fewer resources in student activities and your development outside of the classroom … SigEp wants to help change that. We believe in personal growth and in the never-ending pursuit of knowledge – those things can't solely be accomplished within the walls of the classroom. In fact, you'll spend over 90% of your time in college outside of the classroom.

SigEp offers scholarships to students seeking to invest in themselves and those around them, who are attracted to the ideals of living a balanced lifestyle. It's as simple as that. The scholarship application only takes 15 minutes, and early application deadlines are June 1, 2020, for several universities.

Oh, and by the way, while you're here... I know what you're thinking. A fraternity? Not my thing ... We get it. One thing our Fraternity's founders said a long time ago was "This Fraternity Will Be Different," and that holds true today. From banning pledging and hazing to converting our fraternity houses to substance-free living-learning environments, SigEp has helped form a new path for fraternities across the nation. This isn’t the stereotypical "frat" you see on TV. Rewarding scholarships to qualified student leaders is one way we continue to stand out among the rest – so, have you submitted your scholarship application yet?

What are the eligibility requirements to be qualified for the scholarships?

Generally, these scholarships are open to incoming freshmen men attending one of 140+ universities where our chapters offer the Balanced Man Scholarship. Applicants are not required to join the fraternity in order to be eligible or receive the scholarship.

In some cases, the scholarships are open to a wider range of students, including non-men and upperclassman. To find each chapter's eligibility criteria, start your search at the top of this page to find a school that offers this scholarship.

Are applicants required to join the fraternity to win the scholarship?

No, applicants are not required to join the fraternity to be eligible to apply for or win a scholarship.

SigEp knows the cost of college continues to rise, and more than ever, money is tight. The average college student graduates with over $31,000 in student loan debt. The Balanced Man Scholarship is an opportunity to reward high-quality students, while offsetting the rising costs of higher education.

That's why SigEp awards the Balanced Man Scholarship at over 140 universities across the nation for those students attracted to our ideals of Sound Mind and Sound Body and living a balanced life. Our members are devoted to Building Balanced Leaders for the World's Communities and awarding a scholarship to deserving students is one way we live that out.

What does the application process look like?

The application is simple – it takes less than 15 minutes to apply, and there are no complicated essays or letters of recommendation to secure. We just want to know a little bit about you and get the conversation started.

After submitting your scholarship application, you'll likely hear from someone on the scholarship committee at the chapter you applied for the scholarship with. If you don't hear back, there's no need to panic! Most chapters will continue accepting scholarship applications throughout the summer until the first part of the semester. Once they've reviewed your application, they may invite you to an interview process to get to know your qualifications more.

Is there an interview process for this scholarship?

Almost all of the chapters will choose to interview their top applicants in a face-to-face or virtual setting. They use this as an opportunity to get to know your qualifications better and see if you'd make an ideal candidate for their scholarship.

If you're selected for an interview, you'll be notified by the appropriate point of contact on the scholarship committee. If you don't hear back right away, fear not – several chapters will choose to begin interviews at the beginning of the fall semester. Not everyone will be selected for an interview, but we'll seek to get to know almost everyone who qualifies in this type of setting. More questions? Reach out to the point of contact listed on your application!

When can I expect to hear about who won the scholarship?

The early application deadline for several schools is June 1, 2020, so get your application in as soon as possible! Several chapters will choose to continue accepting scholarship applications throughout the summer and early fall. Additionally, you may be invited to a scholarship interview to learn more about your qualifications.

Once the scholarship committee has had an opportunity to review all applications and interview the top candidates, finalists will be notified about the recognition process. In years past, some chapters have hosted a reception or dinner on campus, while others choose to invite finalists to events with university faculty and administration. Given COVID-19 and the CDC's limitation on large events, this year may look a little different. For more information, reach out to the contact on the SigEp scholarship application page of the school you're attending!
