Who should attend the Cox Volunteer Institute?
Any volunteer who has been serving from 1 week to two years in one of the three qualifying roles, can apply to the Cox Volunteer Institute that takes place at each Carlson Leadership Academy. The Institute has programming that is specific for new chapter counselors, balanced man stewards, and recruitment mentors.
Please reach out to Volunteer Services Director, Callie Verderosa at Callie.Verderosa@sigep.net if you have further questions about the qualifications for the program.
What does the weekend programming consist of?
The late Grand President Phil Cox, Indiana, '84, often stated, "Behind every great chapter are great volunteers." Named in his honor, the Phillip A. Cox Volunteer Institute brings SigEp's newest volunteers together for a weekend-long training at each of the five Carlson Leadership Academies across the country.
The institute features dynamic and in-depth training for volunteers who serve in one of three volunteer roles: chapter counselor, balanced man steward or recruitment mentor. Additionally, to qualify to be accepted to the program, a new volunteer must have served for at least one week, and no more than two years in his or her role.
The Cox Institute onboards volunteers in four areas and includes pre-site, on-site and post-site education. Participants will hear from Fraternity staff, district governors, and experienced volunteers and participate in skill development exercises with their peers that will help them be successful in their role.
They can expect to have training in the following areas:
- SigEp Today
- Supporting Undergraduates Today
- Skill Development
- Position-specific Content and Practice
Additionally, participants will learn about facilitation, the Socratic method and mentoring. They'll spend time practicing these skills with other new volunteers so they’ll be prepared to apply what they learn in the institute with their chapter and AVC.
A detailed schedule will be available online in the coming months.
What does the program cost?
Cox attendees will use the designated volunteer registration that is prepaid by the chapter they volunteer with in their fall bill. This covers the registration fee and meals for the weekend. Only one designated volunteer registration is prepaid by the chapter, therefore, this registration will only cover one Cox attendee from each chapter.
Chapters can send additional new volunteers to the Cox Institute for a registration fee of $250/person. This registration would not include a travel or hotel stipend. If multiple volunteers are interested in attending, they can consult their Alumni and Volunteer Corporation for additional funds to cover the cost.
Additionally, Cox attendees who utilize the designated volunteer registration can qualify for a lodging and travel stipend. The travel stipend is equal to $0.15/mile, round trip, between the volunteer's home and the Carlson hotel. The volunteer can request this stipend using an electronic form that will be sent out at the conclusion of the program. Additionally, when registering, the volunteer can choose for the Fraternity to make his/her lodging arrangements. If they so choose, the Fraternity will room him/her with another volunteer and the room/tax for two nights will be paid for directly by the Fraternity. If the volunteer would prefer to make his/her own arrangements, they can submit a reimbursement equal to one night's room/tax at the conclusion of the program.
If your chapter is sending a designated volunteer that will not be attending the Cox Instite programming please email us at email@example.com and we will work with you to waive the registration fee as a general volunteer attendee.
How does a new volunteer register for the program?
If a qualifying new volunteer is interested in attending the Cox Institute, he or she will register for the program on SigEp’s website. Registration will include a few additional questions to ensure the volunteer has the appropriate qualifications for the program.
